Since ONE was first published in 2008, teachers across the country have used this book as a way to discuss bullying with their students, and ask what they think it means to stand up and COUNT!
AGES 4 and UP
BLUE is a quiet color. RED is a hothead who likes to pick on BLUE.
YELLOW, GREEN, PURPLE and ORANGE don’t like what they see, but what can they do?
When no one speaks up, things get out of hand — until ONE comes along and shows all the colors how to stand together and COUNT!
Read ONE to your students. Afterwards ask what they think the book was about. Read ONE again, pausing to ask more questions. ie:
1. Why does BLUE feel bad about being BLUE?
2. Why don't the other colors help BLUE?
3. Is RED a bad color? Is BLUE a good color? Or do the colors represent different personalities / emotions?
We learn visually with picture books. We learn audibly by listening to the story. And as human beings, we learn through our hearts – being inspired through the narrative. By doing art activities based on the book, we LEARN through our BODIES, thus using all the senses to help us remember the message.
Role plays is a wonderful way for us to practice EMPATHY. What does it feel like to be RED? Or be BLUE? Or like GREEN, PURPLE and ORANGE who don't like what they see but don't know what to do? What does it feel like to be a ONE?
A simple, yet effective way to have students think proactively of how they can stand up for themselves and others, is to have them make a commitment. Simply cut out circles and have them make a promise to help one another. Collectively all the different colored circles can make an image, like a bird, tree or rainbow.
BOOKMARKS
Cut out bookmark in the shape of a ONE. Write ways they can "Be a One", ie. "I am a One when..."
APPRECIATION FLOWERS
Draw a circle + 6 petals. Cut out. On circle, student writes 6 positive words about themselves. On petals, one word per petal. Students exchange petals. Collect flowers for a bouquet.
An author visit can be very inspirational for the students. Many authors do in person or online visits and readings for an honorarium. For more author visit info, contact KO KIDS BOOKS at sales@kokidsbooks.com
